I grew up watching my family's businesses run on spreadsheets, notebooks and WhatsApp messages. Rent was tracked in one file, building costs in another, and the real picture lived in someone's head.
So I built them proper systems. First a property management system for my mum's rental business: tenants, rent, arrears and reports in one place, in shillings and dollars. Then a build and spend ledger for my dad's construction projects, where every expense is checked against its budget.
Talking to other owners, I kept hearing the same story. Most small and medium businesses in Kenya and Uganda run the same way, and the software made for other markets doesn't fit how they work, what currency they use or how they get paid.
